Two weekends ago, we had the pleasure of being apart of the South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center’s summer program series. The workshop was called “How to Harvest Your Own Sea Salt” with Shelly Sells Sea Salts, Inc. About 30 adults and children gathered at Road D in Southampton for an hour and a half lecture and demonstration. The best part was working with the children- their energy and excitement was so inspiring! They were so excited to get their own water and learn how to make their salt. Some families brought their harvested water home that day! Thanks to everyone who attended and a super big thanks to Molly Adams, from SoFo, for asking us to do the workshop! :)

To the workshop attendees - It was so sweet to hear from some of you and for you to share your homemade sea salt! Seriously, it made me smile ear to ear. Thank you for making the workshop such a great experience for us. We plan on doing a few more workshops this fall on the east end of Long Island!

Happy New Year, friends!

I know I've been a bit MIA lately-- it's because good things are happening. :)

Here is our new packaging for the one ounce and one pound bottles/jars. Eventually, this will be up on Etsy, in the mean time, please keep the email orders coming, it is the best way to get in contact with us directly.

The last few weeks have been pretty cold in New York, but the chilly weather has not slowed down our harvest or production schedule.

Thank you for all of your support this year. We incorporated in March and it's been quite the ride. Cheers to 2014 and what lies ahead.

Autumn in New York

Autumn is my favorite season in New York City and out east in Westhampton Beach. Warm days and chilly nights, leaves changing colors, pumpkin picking on the North Fork, and outerwear!

It is also the best season to harvest water for salt making! People often say I am crazy for going in the water during chilly weather, but the water is usually warmer than the air! This results in super clean and fast batches of salt to be made. Hence making it the best season ever :)

(*Note: I do not usually fetch water in a skirt- usually a bathing suit or rain boots!)

A Salty Snack

As you may know from reading my About Me, I come from a large, New York Italian family. I have a gang of nephews (and one beautiful niece) who have had the pleasure of ingesting a good amount of my salt in the last few years. While I use most foods as a vehicle for salt (or peanut butter), they request their salt on a few specific dishes.

One snack that they can’t seem to get enough of are homemade kale chips. I chop up a big head of kale and toss it with a few tablespoons of good olive oil and 3 teaspoons of my salt. Pop it into the oven for 20-25 minutes at 350 degrees and voila!

Mojito Monday

Cocktails and, of course, salt! or Mojito Mondays. My real life job is photography producing for a food magazine. Often, after a shoot, there are left over produce that I attempt to give out before taking home. This shoot in particular included a big citrus story that left me with a ton of orange, limes, and lemons. Luckily, another story we shot included a mint garnish. When life gives you citrus and mint- make Mojitos. To rim the glasses, I mixed a tablespoon of sugar and a tablespoon of salt for a sweet/savory touch.

Spring Harvesting

I love spring time on the east end of Long Island. The best part is that the icy bite in the wind disappears, which makes walks on the beach much easier. Unfortunately, the water is still freezing, but that hasn't stopped us from grabbing buckets of water and making fresh salt. One of my favorite parts of the weekend is going down to the beach with my family. We spend a few hours flying kites, searching for beach glass, jumping off of the dunes, and my nephews (no matter what the temperature is) charge into the water. At the end of the session, I fill up my buckets, we head back to the house, and settle in for a big Sunday meal. Perfection.
